The mandolin is a musical instrument in the lute family (plucked, or strummed). It usually has four courses of doubled strings. 

It has featured heavily in Irish traditional music since the 1960s and 1970s, and is now commonly used to accompany Irish traditional songs including a uniquely Irish playing style suited to the dance music tradition.
